Medicine has been trying to make surgery methods as non-invasive as possible and laparoscopic surgery is one such minimally invasive surgical method. Such minimally invasive procedures are also known as keyhole surgery. Through the laparoscopic method, the surgery on the abdomen is performed through just a small incision measuring about 0.5 to 1.5 cm.
Traditional surgeries involved much larger and damaging incisions made on the body. Laparoscopic surgery has an edge over the traditional “open” surgery in that there is reduced pain owing to the much smaller incisions made on the body, the risk of hemorrhaging is much lower, and the patient requires much lesser recovery time. Laparoscopic surgery entails only those surgeries to be performed on the abdominal or pelvic cavities. Laparoscopic surgery is performed using a specialized tool known as the laparoscope.
Nowadays, vaginal hysterectomy is performed using laparoscopic surgical methods, like laparoscopic hysterectomy (aka. laparoscopic vaginal hysterectomy) or Laparoscopically Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH). Both of these techniques are different in their methods. Laparoscopic hysterectomy involves operating and removing the uterus by a laparoscope, a telescopic device and some extremely fine tools and instruments. In laparoscopic hysterectomy, the patient is saved the trouble of having a big incision cut into her abdomen.
Hysterectomy, performed using traditional methods can be very uncomfortable and painful. But, hysterectomy performed by laparoscopic surgery results in handling much less amount of tissue, thereby much lesser pain and reduced after effects of a traditional surgery. Within laparoscopic hysterectomy, one or two extremely tiny incisions of about 0.5 to 1.5 cms are cut into the abdomen and this helps save a lot of blood and minimizes the patient’s chances of contracting any type of infection. Also, the patient recovers early as compared to the conventional surgery.
Laparoscopic hysterectomy is a relatively safe surgical procedure, which can be performed on almost anyone who is qualified for a conventional hysterectomy.
